Alex has recently launched a brilliant New series of artwork: the 'Alex Echo - New Debut Collection,' in conjunction with a Bournemouth based publishing house. Released as both paper and canvas editions, these are beautifully sized, daring & modern! Finished off with chic white framing.
As you may expect he has chosen bright colours, with a quirky, irreverent & uplifting take on everyday phrases and objects: saltshakers, cakes (‘Have Your Cake’) and rainbows being just three examples! The phrases double as the artwork's titles & are written on to each canvas using childlike fonts, working brilliantly to give the paintings an extra naïve feel.
Alex is an American born artist, originally from Colorado, and now lives full time in the UK. Residing on a farm in West Sussex with his daughter, Echo continues to paint quite simply because he loves it!
He has been a professional painter for over four decades and continues with great success, famous for his colourful abstract works inspired by the natural world. Also sourcing his inspiration from art history, Alex studies the great masters from movements such as Art Nouveau, Impressionism, Abstract Impressionism, Minimalism, Pop Art and even seeks inspiration from Pre-Raphaelite paintings.
The paintings and techniques created by Alex are unique and add a contemporary twist on the works by the great masters before him and this balance of finding past and present is vital to his practice.
Light and colour play a huge part in the artist’s creations, and this is seen through the various brushstrokes and numerous marks made within each new painting allowing us to see how certain lights can be captured within the paints.
Striving to create images like no other artist has enabled the global success of his work and this is collected by icons such as Oprah Winfrey and ex-President Jimmy Carter, to name but a few!
Passionate about the environment, Alex uses substances in his paintings that are as green and sustainable as possible, even collecting the drips of paint from his canvas to re-use in his next works. His love and passion for England enable the inspiration he gains from admiring the sea views, sunrises and the wonderful greenery England has to offer.
Capturing the true beauty of his surroundings makes the artist want to inspire future generations to take care and protect the natural elements of the earth in which he so lovingly adores.
His one man shows, exhibitions, charity work and press coverage, we have a long list going back to 1980! so we can only say Alex has been very busy. But two noted works that come to mind for me are as follows:
Alex was the principal designer for Paul Smith's ‘Couture Women’s Wear Collection’ in (2011) and the artist deemed it a ‘Couture Collaboration’ and I am sure it was a great honour and good fun, as Echo’s work naturally crosses over into design.
He also contributed to the ‘Elephant Family’ charity: ‘Travels with My Elephant’ (2015) campaign. Twenty famous people designed tuk-tuks to be placed around London, then they were journeying to the jungles of Madhya Pradesh in India - raising the charity’s cause profile. Sotheby’s actually auctioned all of them on launch day at Clarence House (with then HRH Prince Charles & Camilla in attendance) and Alex’s tuk-tuk (and a painting he donated to go with it) raised £52,000.
