The image of 'Cocks Only' by Alexander Charles Jones is possibly the most iconic print to appear in the countrylife & shooting genre in the last 20 years; it is both humorous and timeless in its play on the sport of shooting.
What bird is the cock is here? clearly it is the black cock (in latin 'Tetrao tetrix' aka the black game or black grouse), & we can see this by viewing the shape of the bird's head & the patterns & colours of plumage.
Alexander's imagination runs wild here: how funny that the birds decide to arm themselves with the guns, while the hunters, are forced to run away in the woods! Alcohol seems to have played its part with the hunters having left two dozen empty wine (is it Champagne?) bottles in the foreground.
Now the canine is supposed to be man's best friend but in this surreal image, the dogs happily sit at the feet of their new masters.
This print has appeared in multiple formats over the years. The ones sold here are approved by Alexander Charles Jones himself.
