Ben is an artist from North London, born in the 1980s and while in senior school realised, he both wanted to be an artist and had an aptitude for it. At 15, a portrait of his father (for art homework) gained him much recognition from his GCSE Art classmates, such was the skill level displayed by the young Ben.
**A time lapse video of the artist painting: 'Joker' (2019):
Having formally learnt art from school all the way up to University, Bens feels his own style is largely self-taught and he is grateful for the laissez-faire attitude at art college, where students were given a brief and told to work independently - in terms of art creation, research and learning new painting techniques.
These days, much of Ben's work is using acrylic but while at higher education he loved painting with oils but wasn’t always encouraged to do so by his teachers! The result of this was, he had to gain the new skills himself to use oil, to mark make and to ‘control’ the paint and Ben feels it is this experience that really ‘made him’ as the amazing artist we enjoy today.
Interesting double fact about Ben, his love of art was sparked after being introduced to the art of John Varley (1778 - 1842) a famous English watercolourist. Varley was also an astrologer and a good friend of William Blake - who was a painter himself, as well as being remembered as one of Britain’s greatest poets; Secondly, Ben Jeffrey is a distant relation to John Varley & the Varley family!
**Short video of Ben talking at an artist appearance (2017):
As you can see from his back catalogue, he is skilled at: landscapes, wildlife, portraiture, Film &TV icons and even Cartoon characters, such is the control he has over the paint brush from conceptualisation to canvas!
Some of his original subject matter will be no surprise to those that follow Ben, as he is a massive Sci-fi fan and he initially aimed to be a Film Concept artist after completing his studies. This led to him doing a fair amount of digital painting after University, with fantastic results. The British dog artist Nigel Hemming retrained himself in is fifties to do digital painting, with gorgeous results, so I am well aware of how pleasing a medium can be for artists.
However, Ben was drawn back to his love of real painting, the smell, the depth and the experience.
Ben remains one of the most popular original artists at Buckingham Fine Art publishers, with both his original and limited editions selling the length and breadth of the UK
