Barker allows a misty and dark surrounding to support the red figured child, you would have noticed he often uses a stand out colour such as red to emphasise the presence of a child or an object against the bleak greyer tones of the buildings and street.
You can imagine the delight and fun which exudes from the child as he whizzes down the cobbles on his bike down the winding road. You can see how a sense of distance has brilliantly been created and this transpires through to the descending houses too.
I love how the picture lacks colour yet there is something so wonderfully rich about this piece, particularly the sky and how the smoke from the chimneys merge into the different shades of grey. This is a wonderful piece from the artist Bob Barker and is a real credit to this series of work.
