The artist monikered ‘Campbell La Pun’ lives and works in the amazing city of Tokyo, Japan, but was actually born in New Zealand and spent his informative years in Australia.
After graduating from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), he soon left for Tokyo and sent up a studio, beginning his journey into modern urban styles.
It is the energy, sights and sounds of the fast paced neon-lit city that fuels his desire to paint and create his Urban, Pop Art inspired paintings.
The artwork, such as his debut pieces: ‘Bottled Chic’ and ‘Modern Vintage’ are created large-scale for visual impact and its fascinating hearing him deconstruct his artistic motivations.
Firstly, the advertising from big brands like Chanel, Dom Perigon, Louis Vuitton, essentially cultural iconography that uses cutting edge technology to market itself feeds into the collective conscious; Campbell feels he draws from this and using spray paint, stencils and paint brushes, he interprets them into shop stopping images!
Secondly, he seems himself as a people and place watcher, chatting with people, looking at colourways in the world around him, even a perfume bottle can inspire Campbell to make his next dazzling canvas!
Campbell made a splash almost immediately after setting up in Japan, with the public and critics feeling his work was unique and of its time. His paintings have sold around the world and he now debuts in UK gallery wall space!
