One of the most fondly remembered Hanna-Barbera comedy cartoons of the 1970s, Hong Kong Phooey!
The theme song includes the call to action 'Hong Kong Phooey, quicker than the human eye!'
Original airing in the USA in 1974, surprising for just 16 episodes (as 31 different segments), it was likely broadcast in the UK almost at the same time and then reruns into the early 1980s!
Taking on a classic superhero double identity, ‘Penrod Pooch’ aka 'Penry' (an anthropomorphic dog) works as a janitor in a police station but when needed, transforms into the crime fighting martial artist ‘Hong Kong Phooey’ by leaping into a filing cabinet & changing outfits lol.
However, he will always get stuck in the cabinet when changing clothes and gets freed by his own pet cat ‘Spot’!
I am sure the cartoon was cashing in on the surge of interest in martial arts in the west at the time, largely inspired by the martial artist and actor (Hong Kong-American) Bruce Lee & his hit movies, including the blockbuster ‘Enter The Dragon’ (1973).
