No better way to travel but on a Raleigh Burner BMX and imagining yourself as Stevn McQueen in the POW film 'The Great Escape' (1963), and his iconic fence ‘leap’ scene.
In the 1980s, this particular brand of BMX was the ultimate ‘must have’ for many kids in the UK!
Incidentally, McQueen's fellow motorbike enthusiast Bud Ekins and Australian motocross champion Tim Gibbes all performed the stunt successfully (and all were filmed), but insurance stipulations meant Ekins was the performer on camera, not McQueen.
Steve revealed revealed this in an interview on Johnny Carson's ‘The Tonight Show’ after Johnny congratulated him on the feat.
The bike used in the stunt was a Triumph TR6 Trophy, made up to look like a German vehicle, and can be found at Triumph’s factory in Hinckley, UK.
