Dom Pattinson has been variously described as a ‘contemporary’ 'urban' or ‘crossover street' artist but intuition tells me he is far too creatively subversive to accept such labels. Expertly mixing the beautiful with the challenging, he paints canvases that make you reflect deeply in one moment and then become utterly charmed in the next, such is his artistic talent.
Like many of his contemporaries, Israeli artist Yuvi & Dean Martin aka the 'Mad Artist' spring to mind, he openly admits he is standing on the shoulders of artistic giants such as Banksy, Damian Hirst and Andy Warhol, both being huge inspirations to him. Rather than mimic their styles, he synthesises and plays on their artistic twists and Idiosyncrasies, such as using repetition and including Skulls or butterflies - look out for these easter eggs in Dom’s paintings.
Dom was welcomed to the UK published art scene just a few years ago (2021) with his pair of sell out limited edition releases: ‘Look On The Bright Side’ & ‘Set Your Sights High,’ featuring zebra and giraffes rainbow coloured and repeated adjacently (sound familiar?).
However, Pattinson was already a respected artist in North America and internationally. He has done work for fashion brand Ted Baker in their main 5th Avenue store in New York and has also completed a mural inside one of the new World Trade Centre buildings.
He has many celebrity collectors as well, off the top of my head: from Hollywood: Brad Pitt and George Clooney & the UK's own: TV presenter Davina McCall and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher - yes he does have good taste!
Dom now works on canvas and will paint in the studio, but his background is as a street artist. Studying art in his youth, his spent time in the former USSR & was impacted by propaganda posters and artwork that filled the streets; he was equally moved by the murals on the walls of Northern Ireland, and he was taken aback by how they spoke to the viewer and offered a sense of hope during troubled times.
I have been told a BBC documentary on Dom is in production, which I will definitely be watching, but may have delayed by the Covid19 crisis.
