Top Dog by Doug Hyde

View the whole series this edition is part of, the Doug Hyde - 'Top Hats And Tails - Complete Collection.'

This was the lead (no pun intended!) piece of this first series of Doug's 'Top And Tails' in 2015, which was followed up by more prints & sculptures in 2017. So in Top Dog's case a matching sculpture came out two years later.

The black labrador is one of the UK's most popular breeds, so unsurprising both the limited edition picture and sculpture sold out the quickest from the series!

In between the 2 sets of releases Doug released two cat editions in the same format & frame called 'Miss Purrfect' & 'Top Cat'(2016). Perhaps these are unofficial members of the series!

All came in with the same black & white charcoal backgrounds, mounts and curved black frames.

Arguably Britain's best loved Dog breed, the black Labrador retriever, I wonder if this is why Doug has named the print 'Top Dog?'

Pause for a moment and look how simple the image is created with small differences in the light tonnes and two black dots for his eyes' it is instantly a black lab and a wonderfully engaging new limited edition.

So we have a gorgeous image of a black Labrador in this new limited edition by Doug Hyde and the dog has a warm and innocent looking face and did you spot the whiskers?

The picture is 'topped' off with a beautiful multi-coloured scarf around the dog, which I think makes this the strongest image of the new dog releases. The rainbow colours of the scarf works perfectly against the black and white tones of the Labrador and indeed the rest of the picture.

Doug has put him in this brilliant rainbow coloured scarf, perhaps to keep warm, immediately reminding you of actor Tom Baker's depiction of Doctor Who from the TV series in the 1970's.
