Jimmy Law is a contemporary artist hailing from Cape Town, South Africa and is a highly skilled painter & designer. He has been a full time acclaimed artist for nearly 15 years, even broadening his portfolio by designing stunning wallpaper adorned with his art!
We are pleased to reveal his debut releases for the UK with the ‘Jimmy Law - Into Space Collection (2024)’, three wonderful, carefully hand finished, space themed limited editions canvases.
Interesting he only painted his first astronaut during the pandemic & lockdowns of 2020, with Jimmy feeling that the elements of isolation and fear he saw in the world motivated the paintings on some level. He felt the astronaut helmet was representative of the mask wearing from the pandemic, and the forced anonymity it entailed - he wonders how did this effect you?
These paintings also marked his most realistic figurative art to date, and he would often place the spaceman adjacent to elements of the natural world, such as wildlife.
The human face provides endless fascination for Jimmy and through artistic observation over the years, he feels one’s facial look is a reflection of their character. With this new knowledge and armed with a paint brush, in 2010 he began to paint celebrities and famous people, only in monochrome to start, marking the beginning of his professional art career!
Like so many great artists before him, Jimmy was always sketching & drawing as a child and continued to do so into adolescent and then naturally went on to study graphic design as an adult. After graduating, almost every job since has been infused with design: from making Surfboards, Comic book illustration, clothing design, or vehicle customization you name it, but not until he was into his mid-30s did he restart painting as a hobby.
More recently Jimmy has created a debut bronze sculpture, choosing his astronaut as the subject and he has found the whole process of three dimension art exhilarating, challenging and immensely rewarding. Watch this space to see if any become available in the UK or indeed go into limited edition production!
