Initially released as a limited edition sketch and canvas in 2020, Leigh would go on to produce a sculpture of ‘Driving Licence Please Sir! - Sculpture’, from his trio of first ever sculptures, which landed in UK galleries in early 2024.
A young lad goes around the block in a traditional peddle powered go-kart, until a Policeman cheekily stops him and asks to see his licence, and the boy’s expressions reveals he might be seemingly in trouble!
I love the big flame design on the boy’s cart - I am sure it is the envy of every one of his friends - the recognisable bright orangey-red wheels and his old-school flat cap. The Bobby’s uniform tells us Leigh is taking us back into the British past, probably the 1950s or 60s!
A time when every neighbourhood was close-knit, every local Policeman, Postman & Milkman knew the community, and they all looked out for everyone. What will you be doing to help re-establish this back in yours?
