One of the standout editions (of many!) from the artist's award winning football themed collection 'Mackenzie Thorpe - The Game Of Life Tour 2003,' celebrating the beautiful game!
The collection included limited edition prints, sculptures, books and other collectibles.
At the time Mackenzie spoke about the uniting effect of football amongst kids in the ‘Middleborough’ area he grew up in. The only thing they needed to play was a ball and their jumpers to put down for goal posts!
In this scene, the two boys accidentally kicked their ball through the butcher's window & make a run for it! as the shop owner hastily bellows: "You 'Little XXX!'"
More simple times and we are stepping into the (artist’s) past, perhaps the 50s/ early 60s as the man is in a flat cap, tie and overcoat - so smart we know we are in a bygone era.
In fact, it reminds me of the good natured penny pitching shop owner Arkwright from the BBC hit sitcom 'Open All Hours' lol.
The image is a simple one, naive in nature with an incomplete background and soothing green tones for the building & pavements. More simplicity, as you look at the goods on the counter and the boy’s boots, even the pieces of broken glass are simple square and triangular shapes!
