Michael Simpson is also known as ‘Mick Simpson,’ and for a time released a range of bronze sculptures under the pseudonym ‘James Stockton.’
Interestingly, I believe he also cast the David Shepherd - Limited Edition Sculptures, of course using images from David’s famed paintings as reference.
Michael graduated from Staffordshire Polytechnic in Fine Art and the inspiration behind his desire to create sculptures came not from his studies but from his home city of Stoke-on-Trent.
The six famous old towns that form the city are affectionately known as 'The Potteries' and have created some of the world’s best pottery and china. It also has a well earned reputation for producing world class & home grown designers and sculptors!
His work is a unique in so many ways. Michael is one of only a handful of modelers able to make realistic and detailed sculptures covering many forms, including: female figurative, African game, canines, felines and a plethora of British wildlife.
He is able to create his work using a multitude of references: his own sketches, photos, books (or personal observation where possible) - his studio is full of them!
Simpson is also one of the few professional sculptors who opt to use clay to model as opposed to wax, which is more pliable but he enjoys the artistic freedom the medium gives him and is happy to accommodate any of clay's limitations.
