New nationally published artist 'Mr. Sly' has released two debut limited editions for early 2023, featuring two of the UK's most fashionable icons: David Bowie and Kate Moss, on luxurious hand finished mixed media canvases.
His style is very much along the modern lines of his contemporary artists: ‘Yuvi’ & ‘Dan Pearce’ and interesting all three are licensed under the same art publishing house.
‘Mixed media’ means he will draw from a variety of materials to create his artwork, from paints, acrylics, relief inks, spray paint etc, and it gives the production of the limited editions a tremendous scope to develop something very unique.
The artist is not new to the scene and has been painting for over two decades and featured in exhibitions in the UK, Europe and overseas and has done work for big brands such as L’Oréal and Chelsea FC here in the UK.
Born in Liverpool UK, he has a love of urban art which has been enthused and influenced by extensive travel. Believe it or not, he felt hugely influenced from the 'Relax' T-Shirt that accompanied the song of the same name (1983) by UK band 'Frankie Goes To Hollywood.' The original T-shirts contained the slogan 'Frankie Says Relax' and the Liverpudlian band where a huge artistic inspiration for him.
As a fresh artist he then became enamoured with Andy Warhol’s style and the rest as they say, is history and he hasn’t stopped painting since!
While focusing painting music and style icons often reimagined wearing slogan t-shirts, he experiments with neon paints, spray cans and is even adapt at painting mesmerising imagery onto Skateboards! (which then gets framed and wall mounted); in that sense he is parallel with artist ‘Yuvi ‘who also paints unusual objects such as spray paint cans! (in their own showcase containers) & skateboards.
He definitely see himself as a 'pop' urban artist and all his paintings are linked to a song or a recording artist. He looks to tell a story through the composition & lyrics pasted onto each original piece, something that the viewer can then follow.
Recent originals paintings include 'Talking About My Generation' featuring Twiggy & 'Audrey Says Relax' featuring Audrey Hepburn, both feature the celebrities in T-shirts featuring said slogans!
Not the first artist to take historic ikons and bring them into modern paintings, Mr Sly feels like he is reimaging their life: 'As if they are living in a new age’ (now).
