The Astronaut - Muhammed Ali by Paul Oz

An incredible new portrait by Paul of the beloved boxing World Heavyweight Champion, Muhammad Ali. The title of the piece is inspired of course by one of the boxer’s plethora of famous quotes:

“I am the astronaut of boxing. Joe Louis and Dempsey were just jet pilots. I’m in a world of my own.”

He was one of the few boxers who could get away with such cockneyness and his tongue in cheek humour was an extra layer for this most iconic of 20th century athletes.

Paul Oz has done a superb job of recreating the pathos in Ali's eyes, his indomitable spirit and everyman quality; an artistic window into just why we, the public, where so enamoured with me.
