'The Obsession Of Dance’ is a very apt phrase for Robert. As well as describing his artistic motivation, it was the name given to his first one-man show (1985) in London’s Royal Festival Hall, opened by HRH Princess Margaret it fulfilled a lifelong ambition of the artist.
It was also the same name of the UK published poster featuring an image of his painting ‘Hidden Thoughts’ (also released as a limited edition lithograph); at the bottom of the print is had in big font 'The Obsession of Dance' & 'ROBERT HEINDEL’ and this further brought the artist into public consciousness.
In his lifetime he worked with a number of dance companies, exhibited at many prestigious venues and had ‘celebrity collectors’ before such a thing was in vogue.
Those dance companies include: The Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) and Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo. Some of his work hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London & the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
Celebrity collectors & patrons include: the late Princess Diana and Princess Margaret in the UK, Prince (1954-2022) & Princess Takamado of Japan & Princess Caroline of Monaco.
He also worked with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, being commissioned to create images from the musicals ‘Cats’ and ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ (which opened in London in 1981 and 1986 respectively). The actor Michael Crawford, who starred as the very first Phantom, went on to pen the forward to Hendel’s 2003 book ‘Moving Images.’
Robert married in 1959 Rosalie 'Rose' Petres & had three sons: Toby (died 1990), Troy & Todd, he passed away in July 2005 in at home in Connecticut.
Today, his paintings and limited edition prints sit in many public and private collections around the world.
