Born in 1975 in New Zealand the artist's time there was cut short as it was later during that year that the artist would move back to England. The family after staying for a short period in London, relocated to Norwich and this saw the permanent move for the artist who spent the next thirty years of his life in this area.
In 2005, Carruthers decided to call Scotland his home and moved to Perth and still remains here to this day and has never looked back.
Like most artists, Carruthers passion for drawing stemmed from childhood where he would create different ideas and pictures with his brother. This gradually turned into iconic faces and portraiture drawings.
Not particularly interested in academics at school. The artist wanted to pursue a job and still kept art close to his chest as a personal hobby. In later years Carruthers returned to painting, mainly portraiture and the more people saw his work the more the commissions kept coming in. Although the joy for painting was apparent, the artist needed something more stimulating and something more challenging to work on and this had led him to the career he works on today.
Inspirations stem from memories of the artist's own childhood as well as watching and observing his own children, imagination plays a huge part in his creating as he tries to reference the thoughts of his own children as well as create from experiences. Songs too can play a role within his practice. The ideas behind his practices are to keep the surroundings simple and void of colour so that they do not interfere with his subjects. He wishes for his subjects to be seen as individual characters/personalities and not let the surrounding defer from the personalities. Influences from other artists are Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol.
Acrylics are the favoured medium for the artist and this is due to the quick to the quickness it dries. The artist also uses acrylics as there is certain manipulation he can apply when forming his characters.
