We are launching Steve's latest releases, his first box canvas limited editions: 'Concrete Jungle' and 'Going Underground' and tributes to musicians JAY-Z and Paul Weller respectively. A welcome addition to the artists surreal imagination with animals, his time in big cities of London & New York! - January 27th 2020
New to the ‘wider’ UK art audience for 2019, Steve’s art is very much in vogue in UK galleries with a rather fun and irreverent take on wildlife, including heart-warming scenes featuring: giant pandas, polar bears and penguins to name just a few. His art has been accurately described as 'animal surrealism'
Hailing from Bury, Greater Manchester and born in the 70s, he essentially regards himself as a self-taught artist and initially art was not his first career, painting in his spare time and self-developing new art skills. He continued to gain private work and commissions and eventually he drew the attention of a gallery and from there his artistic career flourished, with limited edition prints and originals endearing him to a growing collector base.
Tandy likes to anthropomorphize his animals and place them in everyday 'human' endeavours such as: a riding a motorcycle, gambling in a casino or walking across a cityscape; he definitely has shades of artist Paul James's style in his work, with humour being at the forefront and perhaps more hidden meanings, after you take time to reflect on the canvases.
Steve is inspired by surrealist art, the 1950s and 60s culture and many of iconic stars of the period including James Dean and Monroe; like many ‘Pop’ driven artists he is motived by the work of Andy Warhol and even Dali! perhaps the great surrealist painter of them all.
His work work is best described as a mash up of Pop Art with a generous mix of surrealism and like most of his wildlife art contemporaries there are nods to wildlife protection within his paintings. An interesting fact, Steve is also widely collected in Australia! perhaps art really does cross culture and oceanic divides, as we remember the importance of respecting both the environment and the species that continue to need our protection.
