Terry is famed for his evocative landscape imagery, usually featuring a world famous city such as Venice or London and are often imbued with a modern impressionistic feel. The artist likes to use a very soft colour palette, with his originals having a ‘dream like’ feel to which the public are really able to emote.
His series of limited edition prints released via Washington Green publishers would give his artwork the greatest national exposure to date, having been supplied to galleries throughout the UK & overseas. He is also a skilled illustrator.
Born in the residential suburb of Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, once a thriving ship building area, Terry grew up in a family of three boys.
His journey to professional artist began at the tender age of fifteen, with his talent having stood out during schooling, he was invited to sit an exam to study for the famous ‘Jesmond School of Art and Industrial Design, Newcastle’ (In 1969 merging to become part of Newcastle Polytechnic & today, Northumbria University).
From there he worked briefly in an architect’s office, later moving to a design studio in Blackburn and he also spent a brief period in London during the Swinging Sixties!
Returning to Newcastle while working freelance for various design studios, he decided to devote himself to painting full-time. From that moment, he felt fortunate to be in constant demand for commission artwork including include landscapes, cityscapes and portraits requests of people & wildlife.
Terry elaborates:
“We have four children, one of whom lives in London and the others who live at home with us. Our second son Damian is a great observer and loves the birds in our garden. As a result, we have gradually hung a variety of feeders, baths and bird boxes on the hawthorn tree in our garden and so I often feel as if I am working in an aviary (my study is at the bottom of the garden) but the distractions are most enjoyable!
To live in the Northeast of England for many people that means one thing: football! Our twins Peter and Tim are football mad and are big supporters of Newcastle United, so my wife and I always keep abreast with the ups and downs of their heroes. This is a busy household with a lot going on and much humour is bantered about and I like that; lively young minds can often irritate but it can also be very funny and never dull.
For some years I exhibited my work in my own small gallery in the heart of Newcastle and my seasonal paintings of the countryside and images of the City itself, watercolours and oils, have proved very popular.
My job is to paint, but once the canvas complete it is up to the public to decide what they like. The idea of working in a cocoon without being aware of the public and their opinion is absurd, so every time I receive a call or letter of thanks, I feel a great sense of pride and encouragement, as well as being very humbled that people appreciate my work!”
Terry’s paintings have been exhibited and sold all over the world and he continues to paint his famed cityscape imagery.
