Tom Butler is a newly published artist and brings a fresh and exciting, modern take to traditional cityscape art, a subject perennially popular in UK galleries and beyond; he also seems to have single-handedly popularised a new genre in the collectable art world of ‘Urban landscapes’ & brought it into the high street art lexicon.
**A short video about Tom Butler (2019) & his collage & mixed media preparation:
This month sees Tom release his incredible 'Cutting Edge' collection of new limited editions, and keepsake Book of the same name, featuring wonderful cityscapes of: London, New York, Venice and Paris! - January 2019
Going out in the field and taking his own photographs, Butler will choose one to become the focal point for his next composition. As you may know his pictures are initially created from collage, in that they are built up using bits of paper or magazine clippings, paint, portions of other texts & objects and this in itself, makes his artwork stand out when on display.
Tom will often place a text from newspaper wording or headline into his limited edition, making it as unobvious as possible, often humorous, he likes adding this tongue in cheek element to what is after all, very familiar vistas. - e.g. the wording ‘around the clock’ has been placed into the limited edition ‘Chime After Chime’ & humorously just in front of Big Ben & the house of parliament!
**Tom discusses his new 'City Lights Collection' (2020):
He never takes his success for granted and is both humbled and enthused every time he sees his artwork for sale in galleries or if he attends events showcasing his work - ultimately gaining pleasure in making a living from something he loves to do. By his own admission, he has painted for as long as he can remember and his talent has always been recognised from his earliest days in school, to university and up until the present day,
Tom paints various landmarks and cities: New York, Paris, Venice, Cornwall & his nearest big city, London; no surprise really, as he lives on the borders of Surrey in the home countries and is a short train ride into Central London. He also dreams of moving down to Cornwall or other coastal towns in England and he will therefore paint with loving affection such limited editions as: 'Sennen Cove Boats' or 'Low Tide, St Ives Bay,’ which feature these idyllic seaside towns.
But it is the London ‘Urban landscape’ he paints the most and that he finds artistically most changeling & interesting. Often, he will shuffle and introduce new elements to the collages he creates for a London artwork, bringing them closer in line to the paints he is using.
You may also spot Tom sketching or photographing near iconic London landmarks, as he people watches or waits for a certain view & angle of a London Red Bus or Black Cab, until finally he has the inspiration for his next exciting painting.
